A fire outbreak at Muna Alamdari IDP camp in Maiduguri, Borno State, claimed the lives of two persons and razed down more than 1,000 houses on Wednesday morning.
The fire, which started around 6 a.m., lasted for over an hour before being extinguished by fire service personnel with the help of IDPs, Civilian Joint Task Force, security agencies and other volunteers.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said it has commenced an assessment of
the damages and the needs of the affected IDPs, while also providing immediate humanitarian support to them.
Director General of SEMA, Dr Barkindo Muhammad, said the agency has distributed
500 bags of rice, blankets and other non-food items to the victims to alleviate
He also commiserated with the IDPs and assured them of the government’s commitment to
their welfare and security of the people of Maiduguri .
He urged them to be vigilant and cautious of fire hazards, especially during the dry season.
