In a groundbreaking moment, Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacios, 23, secured the coveted title of Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd edition held in El Salvador.
Palacios’ win marked Nicaragua’s inaugural victory in the competition. The crowning took place at the Adolfo Pineda National Gymnasium, with the newly renovated venue providing a grand stage for the event.
Palacios received the crown and sash from her predecessor, R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States. Among the 84 contestants, Thailand’s Anntonia Porsild and Australia’s Moraya Wilson claimed the second and third positions.
The week-long competition included segments featuring swimsuits, evening gowns, and traditional dresses. Addressing the jury in her final statement, Palacios highlighted the imperative of gender-neutral pay for women across all professions, advocating for limitless opportunities.
The gala, attended by El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, revealed that Mexico will host the next edition of the Miss Universe pageant.
